Somerset Academy of Texas

Somerset Academy Texas, a part of the nationally acclaimed Somerset Network, is a Premeir tuition-free public charter school district with four campuses in San Antonio. We serve grades PreK-12 with specialized programs in STEM, Dual Language, Fine Arts, Sports, Leadership and Management. We also offer early college high school programming, competitive sports teams, and intramurals. Applications are available in November of the current year. The first Somerset Academy Charter School opened in Miramar, Florida to humble beginnings. Somerset’s founder, Fernando Zulueta, formerly a developer of homes, was consistently alerted to a common issue in many South Florida neighborhoods—parents frustrated with overcrowded schools in need of improvements. In 1997, Fernando filed a petition with the Broward County school district, spearheading the development of Somerset Neighborhood School, one of the first charter schools in Florida. Appropriately named Somerset Neighborhood, the school was housed in a two-room schoolhouse and served 50 students from Kindergarten through 5th grade. In only its second year of operation, Somerset Neighborhood’s students achieved the highest Stanford Achievement Test mathematics scores in the state of Florida. A testament to the work being done by the leaders and teachers at Somerset schools. Over the last twenty years, Somerset Academy has expanded to serve over 41,000 students in 75 schools across Florida, Nevada, Arizona, Texas and the Canary Islands. During this time, many Somerset schools were recognized by the State and nationally for their achievements. Most notably, four Somerset Academy schools have been designated National Blue Ribbon Schools. In 2009, Somerset Academy became the first network of public charter schools in the nation to earn Corporate accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools/ AdvancED, known as Cognia, for its proven commitment to quality and educational excellence. Somerset Academy schools are consistently ranked in the top performing schools in their respective districts. High schools within the network have been recognized in U.S. News and World Report and Newsweek “Best High Schools” lists. Somerset Academy schools have, and continue to, achieve academic success with all student populations. Although all Somerset Academy schools share one vision, each campus has a unique and enriching educational program that is tailored to the community and students they serve. This formula, along with incredible support from parents, has made Somerset Academy a nationally recognized, award winning family of high-quality public charter schools.
