The San Diego District Attorney prosecutes many types of auto insurance fraud including: ● Staged vehicle accidents, ● Intentionally vandalizing a vehicle to get an insurance payout, ● Reporting a vehicle stolen when it was not, ● Purchasing a policy after an accident and then submitting a claim for it, and ● Faking or exaggerating injuries or property damage from legitimate accidents to get a larger insurance payout. Insurance fraud is a felony crime. It is punishable by up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $50,000 or double the amount of the fraud, plus investigative costs.
